Carriers
that fly into Honduras are American Airlines (making connections
through Miami), Continental (connecting through Houston)
Delta (connecting through Atlanta) and TACA Airlines with
several U.S. departure cities, including San Francisco,
Los Angeles, Miami and New York. Travellers coming from
Europe (or other areas outside the USA) will most likely
come through Miami on their way to San Pedro Sula, Honduras.
Once you arrive in Honduras at either San Pedro Sula, La
Ceiba or Roatan, you will need to take a domestic flight
to the island of Guanaja. There are several domestic carriers,
however, all these flights originate in La Ceiba. So, if
you arrive at a different entry point you will need to take
a domestic flight to La Ceiba prior to any flight to the
island of Guanaja.
The cost
for one-way flights between most Honduran cities or out
to the islands is about $60 - $70 US dollars (From San Pedro
Sula to La Ceiba then on to Guanaja is about $140). There
is little advantage to buying round-trip tickets as round-trip
is only sightly less than double the 1-way fare, and for
Guanaja it limits your options for departure. If
your travel agent cannot book these domestic flights, WPI
Reservations can arrange to have your tickets waiting for
you on arrival in Honduras.
U.S., Canadian and most western European citizens do not
require any visa for visits less than 90 days. Visitors
will need a valid passport and a return tickets.
There are no official health requirements for travel in
Honduras. However, routine vaccinations for diphtheria and
tetanus should be current. Malaria and Dengue Fever are
known in some regions so you may want to ask your doctor
about these as well as the Hepatitis vaccine.
Even
though these diseases may be rare, be alert upon your return
to the states, and if you come down with an illness similar
to the flu go to the doctor immediately to be tested for
these tropical diseases. Always tell your care provider
that you have travelled to an area known for Malaria and
Dengue Fever.
